The American Legion granted a temporary charter to Machias Vally Post #9 on the Seventh of July, 1919.

 

The charter members were:

A charter was given to Ephriam H. Johnson, Post No. 9, Department of Maine, on August 1, 1920.

It was signed by Franklin D'oliver, National Commander, Lemuel Bolles, National Adjutant; Albert Greenlaw, Department Commander, and James L. Boyle, Department Adjutant.

 

On Janurary 2, 1942, a charter was grant to Post #9 Legion Auxiliary.

   Pvt. Ephriam Herbert Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ephriam Nelson Johnson, was born at Machias, November 21, 1893.

   He graduated from Washington State Normal School in June, 1913.  He taught school at Machiasport, Unionville, Otter Creek and Danforth.  He was principal of Helen Hunt School at Old Town at the time he entered the service.

   On May 27, 1918, he was called to Camp Devens, Mass. for preliminary training, and on July 18, 1918 went to France with Battery D, 20th Field Artillery.  He was killed in action September 26, 1918, (four months after entering the service) in the battle of the Argonne.  He was awarded a medal for action in the St. Michiel (St. Mihiel) drive.

   Military funeral services were held at Machias August 7, 1920.  Rev. Herbert F. Milliken officiated.  Members of Post 9 took part in this, their first military funeral.

The first meetings of Post 9 were held on the third floor of the Sexton Building on Main Street.  The members took turns in providing suppers.
   At a later time, meetings were held in various towns in the area.
   The Smith House on lower Court Street, (where the post is now) was given to the post by Mr. Samuel Holway and his sister, Mrs. Catherine Holway Harper in 1940.
  Captian Henery Lyon Smith was born in this house in 1815.  He was graduated from the U. S. Military  Academy in 1839.  He died in Louisiana September 13, 1853.
   Stephen Smith built the ell when he was an agent for the Indians.  The main part of the building was built by Ellis Smith.
  Miss. Christine Smith (called Teen) was the last to occupy the house.
   On March 22, 1956, the mortgage on the Legion Hall, Post 9 was burned.
